In this article, I write about the pleasures of having a cat as a pet. It took quite a long time for my wife to persuade me into letting her have a cat, but we now have three. I would certainly recommend other people to give a cat a home as they are no trouble at all and add lots of value and love to the household.
Looking back I am not really sure why I was so against having a cat as a pet. It was not for the financial reasons of buying the cat food as it is not exactly expensive. I suppose I thought that they would ruin some of the furniture or may even pooh and wee on the floor. This has not been the case and thinking about it, I was being rather stupid, as you no doubt agree.
This is the daily schedule of our three cats. They wake up in the dining room which is now basically the cats room. They are then fed and eat their breakfast. In this dining or cats room, we have put litter trays down for them, but it is very rare that they use them. The cats then go out of the house for a while and a little bit later can usually be seen sunbathing in the garden, that is if the weather is good of course.
At around twelve midday the cats then come in for some lunch, yet more cat food. I often wonder how they do not get bored eating the same type of food, day in, day out. They will then sleep somewhere around the house for the next few hours before asking to be let out to do their business.
At around 5pm they have some more food and then decide to become a little more sociable. They would then normally join the family in the main living room and curl up to sleep some more, normally on somebodys lap. Each cat is quite funny as they seem to have a favourite member of the family whose lap they would prefer to sit and sleep on. My two children really love our cats especially during the evenings.
The three cats will then wonder out again at around 10pm before asking to come back in around an hour later.
What a life this is, if I am able to come back to this planet after I die, I would like to come back as a cat please.
The cats have really been no trouble at all and we are planning to let both of our children have their very own cat to look after, for Christmas.
For the record if any of you are interested out there, our current cats are called, Tom, Ben and Pip. They all get on really well together and very rarely fight.
Maybe I am just lucky but when talking about the subject of cats with my family and friends, they all tell similar stories to mine.
I have now agreed to owning a dog. Her name is Cassie and even though she requires a lot more attention as in the way of walks, she has also been a dream. In my opinion however you can not beat the cats and their lifestyle.

Aetna, the health insurance giant, may soon be insuring Fluffy the kitty or Fido your pooch. Pets Best Insurance is the new pet insurance company under the Aetna banner. They began underwriting policies last week in six states, and plan to sell in all 50 states before long.
Aetna intends to trade on its market visibility and sell Pets Best policies through the 40,000-plus veterinarians in the United States. Aetna is also counting on this for a new source of income, which will help them weather the economic downturn. Pet insurance sales have been growing at more than 20% a year since the late 1990s.
The policies will also be offered through the company website. Policy premiums will range between $300 and $500 per year per pet, based upon the chosen coverage.
The policies will pay 80% of costs, subject to a deductible, for each illness. Routine checkups, lab tests, prescriptions emergency room visits and other services are covered.
Pet Best's policies are comparable to those that have been on the market since about 1998. Some insurers exclude hereditary and chronic conditions, others don't.
Should you buy Pet Insurance?
About 60 percent of American households have a pet and spend over $10 billion a year on veterinary care.
If a pet lives an average of ten years, you could shell out between $3,000 and $5,000 on premiums for each pet. Without insurance, you might not ever spend that much on medical treatment. Animals, like humans, can suffer from a plethora of common ailments that can make their lives miserable. This is why loving pet parents need to not only protect their pets from the discomforts that can besiege them; they should also find a way to do so without the use of harsh chemicals.
The solution of course is via the use or of organic, holistic an herbal remedies that are gentle and safe for not only animals but their human caretakers.

Discontinue use if this occurs. Combine the yeast with the garlic in your animal's food, and consider doubling the dosage during peak flea season (August and September).
Treating Infections Without Chemicals
Garlic oil alongside echinacea and goldenseal in your pet's food can raise immunity and help eradicate low grade infections. During the therapies, carefully observe your pet and make sure they are responding the treatment you are giving them. Again, note that garlic is toxic to cats.
If the infection persists, and you are not able to find a Holistic Vet in your area, you may have to take your animal to a a local Vet for a shot of antibiotics.
Also be aware that essential oils are NOT good for cats either. Cats lack the ability to metabolize the various compounds in essential oils.
Natural Ways to Treat Diarrhea, Vomiting and Dehydration
People use slippery elm to clam their own stomachs and the powdered version of the bark can help alleviate nausea, vomiting and excessive diarrhea in animals. If your animal experiences dehydration from their stomach troubles, powdered or liquid electrolyte solutions will work. If you opt for Gatorade or an equivalent, cut the solution with water as the sugar is not good for domesticated animals to ingest for long periods of time.
Healthy Skin and Coats
Fish based oils, like cod liver oil, can keep your pet's skin and hair shiny and thick. Place it in your pet's food a couple of times a day for best results.
Cod lover oil can also keep the skin from itching, as dryness is usually the reason for this symptom in the absence of fleas. It is also an excellent source of Omega 3 and Vitamin D, both known to support the immune system.
If for any reason your pet has itchy skin while using cod liver oil, try licorice or dandelion root. This will help boost the immune system which aids the skin and coat automatically.
Calming Anxiety Naturally
Pets can get skittish for any number of reasons. Animals who have been rescued from shelters or suffered previous abuse may routinely exhibit anxiousness. Calm their nerves as well as their fears with herbs like Valerian, which is used in humans for the same reason. Chamomile brews or a gentle rub of lavender oil on your pet's snout or nose will also help keep your animal happy and stress free.
Be sure to adjust the doses to coincide with your pet's weight. Small cats and dogs will not need as much herbal medicine as a bigger animal would. Also, begin the regimen slowly, a few days on and a few days off, so that you can observe any potential reactions.

For the first 12 years of her life she was as normal as most dogs. That is to say she spent her days in search of the doggy basics: food, walk, play time and loving. Not to mention the never ending hunt for the single best place to pee or poop.
Then about a year ago Annie began to develop dog allergies. At first we thought she had fleas. We diligently applied Frontline, gave her flea baths and combed and brushed her but this did not relieve her itching for long. Over time she developed red and scaling sores on her belly and especially on the butt near her tail.
Her licking and scratching went on every day and, worse, into the night. It was not uncommon to be awakened by the sound of her licking. She, and I, needed relief.
We visited the vet and she informed us that dog allergies occur in over 40% of the dogs that seeks vet treatment for itching and scratching. She explained that these allergies are caused by any number of food or airborne allergens.
The first issue was to get her licking and scratching under control.
To do this involved a three step approach. The first step was a medicated bath that helped sooth the skin. Step two was to start Annie on a course of antibiotics to kill the sores that had formed on her body. Finally, to control the scratching, a 10 day steroid dose was prescribed. In terms of side effects the main issue was the steroids that caused her to drink a ton more water than normal and to be hungry all of the time. Fortunately she did not start to exhibit personality changes brought on by mood swings caused by the steroids.
Within 3 days Annie was feeling much better. She was better but the cause of her dog allergies was not yet understood.
Was it in her food? Was it in our home? Was she allergic to our cat?
The search for answers is a long process much like getting to the bottom of a human allergy problem. There are many approaches to take but we chose to focus on the food related possibilities. The first step was to eliminate all the store bought food from her diet. But wait, this can have unforeseen side effects. You see as bad as dog food is, given the fact that it contains simply unknown parts of unknown animals, there has been enough testing to know that from a nutritional standpoint it does provide the right blend of nutrients to keep our normally healthy dogs healthy. So by feeding a diet of homemade food we effectively removed the potential allergen but compromised her health. An alternative solution was to move to a vegetarian based dog food and get the animal impurities out of her system.
The follow up step was to do lots of research, as even the best vet in town does not have the time to dedicate to understanding the issue as much as the dogs owner. The internet contains a huge database of information on dog allergies as written by drug companies, veterinarians, pet owners, and complied into many useful sites.
