Tips For House Training Your Dog

Author: Thomas Cash

The first thing you must have when attempting to house train your dog is "patience." Keep in mind that when we were young, we too had to learn where and when we could go. Bad news is, we don't have doggie diapers, but the good news is we don't have to get our dogs on a toilet seat! Also, dogs are instinctively clean animals, they would prefer to not to mess themselves or their usual eating and sleeping areas. Depending on the age of your dog, they naturally develop tendencies to go on certain surfaces like grass or dirt, use this as a stepping stone to a quicker and more successful training cycle.

Establish the Living Area with Your Dog

Help your dog establish their living area in a small confined space, maybe a bathroom, part of the kitchen or garage. Please make sure that if you plan to have your dog in a crate, make it an open environment. Some people think that putting the dog in a crate and shutting the door helps them get used to their surroundings, but it doesn't. Using a crate is OK if you let your dog live comfortably by letting them have some freedom to go in and out as they please, unless you have to leave the house for a short period of time. Keeping them locked up for long periods of time is when you should ask yourself if you are really ready to own a dog.

Take the time to work with your dog to establish their living area. Spend time playing with them in their "room" as well as let them eat and sleep here. Do your best to make their room comfortable, maybe give them a comfortable dog bed, blanket and give them a bowl of water in, or close to their space. It's possible they might still wet their space in the beginning but once they realize that their room is designated for their comfort they will do their best to avoid going in their space as long as they have regular opportunities to go to the toilet on the paper or outside.

When your dog has had the time to get comfortable with their room, you'll be able to move it around and they will follow it to wherever you decide to place it. It's important to find a place that makes them part of the family surroundings but is equally convenient for you so you don't feel they're "in the way" a dog will become part of the family in no time, trust me!

Once your dog gets to the point of sleeping in their bed feel free to confine them there by leashing them or shutting the crate door to keep them in their room, just be aware of them and ensure you can keep an eye on them. Keeping your dog on a leash unattended is not recommended anytime. Also, if you feel that you want to keep an eye on them when there awake, just keep their leash attached to your belt during your daily routine to help you identify any tendencies and help monitor their behavior.

Establish the Toilet Area with Your Dog

Help your dog establish their toilet area, at first it will probably be inside the house on some news paper, just make sure they that they have access to this area when they need it. If they do not have access to this area they will go in other places and establish their own areas, the problem being this might not be ideal for you and your family. Until they are comfortable going in the designated area, it is important that you accompany your dog every time.

The best way to gauge when your dog has to go to the toilet is to keep them on a regular eating schedule. You will start to see that when they eat at a certain time they will need to go to they toilet after an approximate amount of time, this will give you a better understanding of when they have to go. A regular eating schedule means a regular toilet schedule this will help you to plan out your day without having messy accidents everywhere. If your dog is confined too long and has to go, they will potentially go in there space and it will get increasingly more difficult to house train them.

If you have a new puppy they have a harder time controlling their bladder so you might have to take them a little more frequently, but healthy adult dogs should be able to control their bladder and bowels for about eight hours. Also, keep in mind that when new puppies get excited they might make little mistakes, make sure you don't scold them in this instance, just let them know they did it and show them the regular toilet area. Every time they go in the right place make sure you let them know they did good, this will reinforce what you're training.

As you are training your dog in the house you should be working with them outside as this is where your dog will end up going. You have to read little signs to know when they're ready to go and if convenient take them outside right away. Don't expect a puppy to bark when they need to go, they're not there yet! You will know something's up when your dog starts to get restless or starts sniffing around, they're actually looking for a spot to go. Just pick them up and take them outside, they'll do the rest, you can urge them a bit with the command that you want them to go. Again, once they go it's important to acknowledge them in a positive way so they know that this is where they must go. When they get comfortable with this they will start to ask to go out.

Some Tips

* If you follow the instructions as outlined above, your dog will be house trained in a short period of time. One way to speed up the process is to praise and reward your dog each and every time they go successfully in their toilet area. It is just as important not to scold your dog for accidents and mistakes. Reprimanding your dog usually confuses the dog and slows down the house training process.

* If you find that your dog continues to go in their allotted space, make note of how long they were there. You might find they were in there too long or they're space is a bit too big for them, giving them the room to go in the corner of they're space. You can remedy this by not leaving them there too long, establish a smaller sleep area and take them to the toilet more often.

* If you find that your dog continues to go in their bed, this might be due to being confined there too long and they couldn't help themselves, or they are still trying to understand that this is their sleep and comfort space. Again, try not to leave your dog in their space too long and try to take them to the toilet more often.

* If you find the bed wetting continuing longer than you feel is right, you might want to look at their water intake. A lot of dogs will drink water out of boredom or habit, ensure you're limiting their intake and take them out more often if possible. Also, try and keep your dog active to ensure good health and limited boredom, get them into good habits. Also, be aware that continued messing can be due to unknown medical issues like urinary tract problems for instance, try the tips above first, it's usually something simple that you might be missing.

* If your dog doesn't feel comfortable in their space and/or surroundings you might notice signs of them barking, chewing, some anxiety or whining a lot. If you feel this is happening go back over your method and ensure you're making them as comfortable and welcomed as a family member.

Remember, love, due diligence and patience on your part will make it a smooth and "clean" transition.

Pomeranian Puppy House Training Tips

Author: Lee Dobbins

Adopting a Pomeranian puppy can be a great time of joy and fun, but if you want a housebroken adult dog and your work begins the minute you bring your puppy home. Many people don't know the right way to go about housebreaking their dog so below are some Pomeranian puppy house training tips that might come in handy for your new Pom.

The first thing to remember when house training any dog, but in particular your Pomeranian puppy, is that positive reinforcement is best. Never hit your dog or yell at him or rub his nose in his "accident". This will not get you the results you want and isn't fun for either you or the dog.

Your Pomeranian puppy's training should start the day you bring them home. This is usually the most difficult part since you want to just relax and have fun with your cute little ball of fluff, but if you let them run all over the house being every corner it set a precedence, as well as an inviting odor, for him to continue this behavior. So the best thing to do is to start off training right away.

House training your puppy is largely a matter of, observance and persistence. When you see your dog acting like he has to "go", then you should immediately bring them outside to the area that you want him to do his business and. This means that you left keep a keen eye on him and learn to recognize the signs. Obviously, if you see him squatting this is a sure indication - don't yell but just sharply say no or distract him in some way so he doesn't actually begin to do his business and then pick them up and bring them right outside setting him down gently. When he does finally go outside, pet him and praise him so that he knows that this is the desired behavior.

You can't always be home with your Pomeranian puppy, so in these instances it's good to confine him to an area that has a sleeping section, food and water bowls and section for him to go to the bathroom. This can be a large crate or you can do like my husband did and build a little removable fenced in section that extended off the face of the crate. We would leave the crate open and my Poms bed was in the crate, then out in the fenced in section she had her puppy pee-pad and a section for her food and water. The fence was only about 2 feet high but she couldn't jump over at so to do good job of keeping her contained but still giving her some room to move about.

Now the only thing with this Is that you're puppy may become little bit confused because on one hand you're saying it's okay to go on the newspaper or keypad but what you really want is your dog to go outside. The problem is is when they are young puppies they can hold it very long and if you work you just simply cannot be there to let them out every time they need to go. one way to work with this is as the dog gets older move the pad closer and closer to the door bringing him outside as often as you can. Finally you will hopefully be able to remove the pad altogether and have a Pomeranian that runs over the door to indicate to you that he needs to go out.

The key to Pomeranian puppy house training is patience and persistence. You simply can't give up after a few days if your dog isn't behaving the way you want. You must keep at it, rewarding your dog when he does his business outside. Like many toy dogs, Pomeranians can be a bit difficult to house train and you'll have to be patient in order to get the results you want.

House Training Dogs On Pads

Dog Training Pads – a Must Have for Your Dog

Author: Sam Nichols

Any dog lover would want to have his pet inside the house. Having to share each activity and experience inside the house with your dog makes the owner happy and a lot less lonely. Unfortunately, bringing the dog in would also mean bringing in the dog poop and urine.

That is why most dog owners make sure that their dog is potty trained at the soonest time possible. This is where dog training pads come in handy.

These pads are necessary if your floors are carpeted and hard to clean and maintain, or if you have babies and toddlers crawling just about everywhere. Just the same, even if your floors are easy to clean, you wouldn't want to step on anything gooey, right?

A training pad is made of an absorbent material to hold dog waste and urine. The thick surface is treated with some scent which, when sensed by your pet, will make him defecate or pee on it instead of some other place.

This means that the dog's waste shall only be confined to the pad, except if there will be leaks. The owner shall then regularly check and clean the pad to maintain an odor-free household.

To maximize the use of these pads, keep it in one particular spot of the house. This is usually placed in the kitchen or near the bathroom, for easier and faster clean ups in case of leaks and other accidents. Place it in a particular spot and lead your dog to it.

These pads often have a scent which sends signals to the dog, instructing him to pee in that location. So the next time that he feels like excreting anything, he shall only do so in the pad and not anywhere.

Lastly, do not forget to acknowledge the effort that he did. In this way, he will most likely do the same thing next time. Praise him verbally or through actions, like a pat on the head or by giving him some treats. Positive reinforcement is an effective method of training your dog.

Aside from serving as toilets for your pup, these training pads also serve as beds for some dogs. This explains why there are various designs and types of pads available. You can find round, igloo types as well as the regular rectangular ones.

Of course we want to keep our dogs warm during the cold seasons, so you might consider getting a heated pad for your pet. A temperature control enables you to adjust the degree or amount of heat as well.

Innovations in the design and technology of the training pad resulted in the creation of new and more efficient designs. Although these may cost more than the traditional pads, these new products prove to be better and more effective, making it easier for you to maintain a dog indoors.

Dog training pads are one of the lesser-known tools in dog training. While it may not be popular, it is still a very basic and helpful tool in training your dog. This aid is most useful for those who do not have a backyard or dog house for their pet, particularly apartment or flat dwellers.

As toilet or bed, these pads remain to be among the most important dog supplies, a must-have for dog lovers like you.

Dog and Puppy Potty Training: How to

Author: Allen McDaniel

Dog potty training is one of the most basic types of training that would be expected from the dog and its master. House training a dog is different for every dog but there is a general formula that I use to train every dog. House training a dog is a must if you want to train your dog on how to behave properly especially when it comes to urinating or defecating.

Dogs do not like to use the bathroom near where they eat. Dogs are naturally clean animals and will not usually pee or poop at places where they sleep.
A dog’s natural instinct is to please his/her owner. The best house training procedures are those that use the dog’s own instincts to the owner’s advantage. When a dog pees on carpet or a puppy poops in house, this is simply your dog’s way of saying "I don’t understand."

Housebreaking your new puppy is going to take patience. Unfortunately, many dog owners do not use the right training protocols for housebreaking a dog. You should establish a housebreaking routine for the puppy.

The first thing you want to do when considering how to potty train a dog is be sure your pet is healthy to start with. Take your dog for walks at the time that he usually does his potty. House-training a dog requires repetition and affirmation.

House training a dog is not always easy, but starting off on the right foot can make all the difference. Whether you want to potty train a dog or puppy, it is important you learn how to potty train a dog properly. Eventually your dog will learn you don't like him going in the house and will learn by your dog potty training to hold it until you take him out.

Tips On Crate Training Dogs

Crate Training Dogs: Here's ...

Crate Training Dogs

Author: Christian Ray Dinopol

Training your dog for the crate is very beneficial for your dog and for you. It's a safe and comfortable space for your dog, actually it is less stressful for your dog. It gives your dog a space of his own so he can relax and give you a little time to relax too, knowing that he is safe and comfortable.

When training your dog, you should never force it, gradually introduce your dog to the crate and let him know it's not punishment or a way to seclude him. It's a place to keep him safe when you are not home, as well a place of his own. It's very beneficial for when your dog has surgery or you need to travel.

Crate training dogs isn't a form of cruelty, even though some people might view it that way. This is a very important step for your dog to learn. When done properly, it provides safety and someplace comfortable for him to retreat to and is a very valuable training tool. Training is most favored when in your dog is young, but isn't necessary.

Crate training dogs can be done in many ways and styles, but the most important thing to remember is to always us positive reinforcement. You can start by introducing your dog to the crate by saying to him "kennel" and let him get into the crate on his own, never push. The goal here is to have him feel comfortable. You can try and put treats in the crate, and placing a soft blanket in the crate also. Speak to him in a happy voice, keep it positive.

When he feels comfortable and gets used to entering the crate on his own, you can put his food dish inside close to the opening, and in time gradually place the dish further in the crate, and eventually you can close the door while he eats. At this time you will be able to have him stay in the crate in short periods of time while you are home, and longer periods of time alone.

Make sure you put him in the crate about 15 to 20 minutes before you leave, and to have him also in the crate when you are home. This will keep him from thinking that by going into the crate, that you are leaving him, which can cause anxiety.

For keeping your dog from feeling isolated at night, you can place his crate in your bedroom or just outside your door. And then when he starts to sleep through the night, and this does not cause anxiety or any problems, you can put the crate in the spot you want. Don't worry if this takes a little time, every dog is different and learn at their own pace.

So using a crate for your dog is a great way to strengthen your relationship and to let your dog feel comfortable and safe. And safe and happy is what is most important.
