Potty Training Puppies

Author: Steve Searls

Once you bring your little puppy home, there are several questions in the back of your mind that may trouble you, like what steps do you take concerning potty training puppies.

You should remember that bringing home a young dog is like bringing home a baby. It is completely helpless and dependent on you. So the same way your child can give you sleepless nights, you can be sure that he can too! But you will never regret getting it home because it will fill it with love and happiness.

You will be happy to know that potty training your pup is not all that difficult. Here are some tips and techniques of puppy potty training that really work.

1) First buy a kennel or a play pen. Be sure that it's big enough for him to grow into, but not too big.

2) Use puppy pads to line the kennel or play pen. The play pen should provide enough room for the bedding, as well as the puppy pads. But since a kennel will be a little smaller, your new pet may find it a little difficult to adjust in the beginning. Dogs are unlikely to relieve themselves where they sleep, but when they are so young, they may have a hard time holding in for any length of time.

Besides from being an excellent way to potty train, a play pen is also helpful when you just cannot give enough attention to your new pet. Your little pup can remain safe in the play pen and will not get into anything to create a mess.

3) Use puppy pads or newspapers for him to relieve himself about half an hour after you feed him.

4) If you catch your pup relieving itself elsewhere, immediately put it on a newspaper or pad where it can finish doing its business. Your innocent pup is unlikely to respond to rude behavior. A mild scolding may be needed if you catch him in the act, but you should never hit him. Preferably, you should reward your him or her with praise or even treats when they do their business on the papers or pads. This way they will learn things quicker.

5) As soon as your young whelp has received its third set of shots you can begin putting them outside to do his business. You can move the newspaper outside to help them get used to it. Take him out every hour or so, preferably to a designated area. Once he goes, praise him and play for a while. Just don't be surprised if he ends up going again ... on you. Puppies are like that, but should grow out of it in time.

6) Once they grow a little older you can start to train them to go outside.

Following these simple tips will result in your young dog being well trained and well behaved. You may find potty training puppies to be somewhat difficult initially. But keep trying and he will eventually understand what is being expected out of him. Like it is with any other training, it is also very important that you follow a routine with potty training and develop your puppy into a well mannered adult dog that you can be proud of.

PUPPY CLASS

Puppy Potty Training Done Correctly

Author: Stacey Reid

For many dog owners puppy potty training is no doubt the hardest thing they will do once they bring their new dog home.  It doesn’t have to be difficult but for owners that are impatient and unlearned it will be an experience that could prove to be frustrating.  This is why new pet owners should always consider learning how to train their pup properly whether through class room learning, videos, or a book.

Puppy potty training for the pet owner is not too extensive but is rather lots simple tips and tricks they can use to familiarize the new pup to the family with housebreaking rules.  Once the pet owner understands that they are in control of their pets learning and functioning in the home then it becomes easier to deal with mishaps that will occur from time to time.

There is never a need to discipline your new puppy harshly except to rethink what you could’ve done differently in your puppy potty training sessions.  It is always important to remember that your dog has to be trained and whatever time you invest in teaching it new skills, only then will you see proper behavior.

The average puppy owner tends to use harsh treatment such as screaming or literally spanking their new pup into what they think is learning and teaching but on the contrary those are negative puppy potty training methods.  Those methods are considered old school that many dog owners still follow but honestly is a sign that the owners are not teaching but yet letting their emotions dictate learning.  This is the wrong way to train your puppy.  It should embarrass an owner when he feels he needs to spank his pet.  The right approach is thinking to yourself what can I do to teach my pet better which is a sign of needing proper training tips.

When in the market to purchase a new puppy be sure you are willing to learn how to properly train your new puppy.  It is easier to adapt your new pet to your home environment when proper training methods are incorporated.

Dog To Dog Aggression-Learn How To Stop Dog To Dog Aggression

Author: Gary Price

Tired of your four legged companion being aggressive towards other dogs? Are you looking for ways to learn how to stop dog to dog aggression? Although aggression is a difficult issue to deal with, there are different ways in which the issue can be resolved. Here are some tips for you to stop dog to dog aggression.

1 – The first step is to recognize your dog’s bodily signs of confrontation. He might stare at the other dog with the hair on the back on his neck standing. He may also flatten backwards and with a tilted head keep on staring at the other dog. This is the time to intervene, if you fail to intervene at this moment your dog may start barking or attack the other dog.

2 – While you learn how to stop dog to dog aggression, safety should be your first priority if you have a generally aggressive dog. Muzzle your dog to avoid injury to another dog.

3 – Socialize your dog as much as possible; however, you should keep him on a short leash. The more your dog encounters other dogs the less likely he will feel intimidated on spotting one.

4 - While you are on the sidewalk and another person approaches with his dog, stand in front of your dog blocking his view to the other dog and keep on speaking to him so that his attention is towards you and not the other dog. Praise your dog and perhaps give him a treat if he stays calm.

5 - You should control your own emotions while the dog is behaving aggressive. Do not yell still issue commands firmly. With your anxiety you can worsen his tension and make him to act more aggressively.

As you can see here learning how to stop dog to dog aggression can be a difficult and tedious process.  When working with an aggressive dog, a good dog training course can be very useful. You will want to look for the one that includes a free consultation with an experienced dog trainer.

Obedience Training For Dogs Knoxville

Appleridge Obedience Family ...

Yorkshire Terrier

Author: David Beart

In another land and time the Yorkshire terrier was not a small longhaired show dog and pet. Rather, he was a larger rat killing dynamo. Tracing back to the 1600's the breed was valued in textile mills, mines and farms where pest control was important. In the 1860s era the breed was quite popular in rat killing contests - with the dog credited with being the foundation of the breed showing as well as winning many contests. Huddersfield Ben helped establish the Yorkshire Terrier.

It was 1872 before the breed was brought to the United States, and was recognized by the AKC just six years later. As late as the 1930's the Yorkshire terrier was said to look as they do today but were closer to 30 pounds, not the 3-7 pounds of today. They were for some time in their history a 12-14 pound wire haired dog known as the "broken-haired Scotch terrier."

Today the Yorkshire terrier is in the toy, not the terrier, group. Their longer show coat is not a practical point on many farms. With their jobs reduced, they were bred down as pets, a role that they have taken on with overwhelming success.

With their small size few would see them as hero potential. Yet in World War II a Yorkie named Smoky became a war dog, outwardly entertaining soldiers with tricks they taught her. Her small size meant she could do something valuable the big dogs couldn't - she helped run communication lines through a culvert under a runway. This meant the runway did not need to be shut down for several critical days. After her service she returned to her home in Ohio with her handler. One report was that she was awarded eight battle stars for her service, and her story is remembered many years later.

They have a spirited temperament and are normally an intelligent small dog with a little "fire." It is worth noting that some can be quite territorial and must be closely watched. Their attacking a much larger dog can prove a fatal flaw if the large dog retaliates. Like other terriers, they can be bold and bossy.

Their independence can be viewed as hard to train by some. They take patience and a willingness to think ahead of the dog. They can be successfully trained for many activities including obedience, agility, earth dog, flyball, canine freestyle, entertainment and pet therapy. Agility courses involve running through a series of obstacles. One of the newer competitions is called rally, evolving from road rally competitions. This also has a series of obstacles, but unlike agility where there is a course to be followed, this involves moving from one sign to another, and you don't know where you're going in advance.

Basic obedience training is good for all dogs to learn. The above competition events are an outlet for a Yorkie's energy - even if you just do it at home for fun. Keep the sessions fun and play-filled.

From a health standpoint Yorkies tend to be rather long lived but they can develop cataracts as they age. An issue with tracheal collapse can result when an improperly trained Yorkie pulls excessively on the leash, although some believe this is partly genetic. Liver issues are not unheard of also, and require veterinary treatment to live a comfortable life. Failure to diagnose and treat this can result in, among other symptoms, seizures and behavioral problems.

Patellar luxation and retinal dysplasia are two other serious disorders that can affect Yorkies. The latter is an eye disorder which can be passed on by genetics. Buying from a reliable breeder is important.

A condition called hemorrhagic gastric enteritis is particularly dangerous to small dogs, with less body reserve than large dogs. Health issues should be discussed with the breeder when you purchase your puppy - many offer health guarantees.

Hypoglycemia is another problem that can occur more often with toy breeds. Because of their small size, they have little reserve. Hypoglycemia, also known as low blood sugar, can result from temperature, stress or too long between meals. Feed regular meals of good quality food. Keep Karo syrup or honey on hand just in case there is a problem. If your puppy looks sluggish or wobbly rub his gums with the honey or Karo. If you catch it early placing a little on the tongue so he swallows it is good. Do not ignore this - it can be fatal.

With their smaller size extra attention is needed to insure the dog does not become overweight and that they get sufficient exercise. While many people simply carry them, they need to walk, run and play like other dogs also.

For those interested in the show standard it can be found at http://www.akc.org/breeds/yorkshire_terrier/ - and is worth noting by the standard there is specific markings allowed and a maximum weight of seven pounds.

This leaves an opening for pets of those that are slightly larger or don't have the perfect marking and color allowed. Being a small dog, 2-3 puppies per litter is normal.

There are people who advertise "teacup" or "teeny" Yorkies - many breeders recommend against these extra small dogs due to health issues and other problems that breeding for the extra small size can bring. The breed is already small. There are some that have solid or parti-color dogs - these do not meet the standard and may not be registered.

The long flowing coat of today takes maintenance and regular grooming. This is a breed that is said to not shed - regular brushing takes care of dead and damaged hair. Show dogs are kept up quite intensely, like long-haired dogs of all breeds. That coat that catches the eye also needs much attention. For the pet home, regular brushing to keep the coat from being tangled and matted is important. Be sure to get all the way down into the coat.

For those not wanting to keep up the long coat, get a pair of good electric clippers and clip the belly, "under arm" area, between the hind legs and up to the anal area. While this is basic, it keeps the hair shorter and easier to groom. There are several good grooming guides online and in print that can help guide you to a cut and routine that works best for you and your dog.

Like other long haired breeds use caution bathing so as to not tangle the coat, and rinse all traces out of the coat thoroughly. If desired, and depending on the situation, use a good quality conditioner rinse and rinse thoroughly. Use a hair dryer and comb to comb through and completely dry the coat. Extra caution should be used to not use the high heat that can burn puppies as well as bigger dogs.

A good metal comb with long teeth can be found for under $10 - this gets all the way down into the coat. Comb through the coat to insure no tangles start that can become matts. This doesn't take a long time if done regularly, and brushes can miss some tangles that can easily be removed when starting, before it gets to a tangled mess.

Teeth should be cleaned regularly, which can be helped with appropriate chew toys. Ears should be trimmed so as to allow them to stand erect.

Joan Rivers and Eva Gabor (of Green Acres fame) are but two celebrities who have a Yorkie as their dog. Others reported to have Yorkies include Bruce Willis, Richard Nixon, Justin Timberlake, Audrey Hepburn and Brett Favre.

In popularity the Yorkshire Terrier has found favor with those in cities, with limited room for a bigger dog. They are second overall with the Labrador Retreiver by AKC standings. For individual cities they top the list in Orlando and are tied with Labradors in Tampa. They're second most popular in Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Vegas, Miami, New York City, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Washington D.C. In Austin, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Knoxville, New Orleans, Seattle and Tucson they are third, and the only city they don't appear in the top ten is Milwaukee.

A lifespan of 12-16 years, sometimes longer, underscores the importance of taking on the puppy for life. Good food, proper care and safe management can result in a dog that is with you for quite some time. Putting time and effort into a good dog is never wasted!

Adult dogs that are comfortable around other canines and people have usually received proper socialization early in their life. It begins within the first few weeks following birth. If a puppy has positive experiences with others, he will typically develop into a healthy, friendly canine. You'll be able to place him within a variety of environments without worry regarding how he'll behave.

On the other hand, if a pup has been abused or has suffered negative experiences with others early in his life, he will likely display fear and distrust. This can have a major influence on his ability to remain comfortable around other dogs and people.

In this article, we'll explain how socialization begins with a puppy's exposure to his mother and littermates. We'll also describe how puppies learn to relate to the first people they meet, including their new owners.

Mother And Littermates

A puppy immediately learns to trust his mother. She provides warmth and protection. She gives him a feeling of security from the unknown and unexplored world that lies beyond his immediate environment. His mother is also the one who helps him learn how to breathe and eliminate. If his behavior becomes unacceptable, she provides loving but firm discipline.

His littermates provide an opportunity to interact with peers. He learns to play with them and test boundaries. This is the time during which he learns the value of relating to his own kind. Puppies who spend very little time with their littermates before being adopted often have trouble getting along with other canines in adulthood.

First Exposure To People

Professional breeders try to expose puppies to people within a few weeks of their birth. The earlier a puppy interacts with people, the more comfortable he will be around them throughout his life. Many breeders encourage kids to hold and pet the puppies in their care within the first week following their birth. As long as the interactions are supervised and children are taught to be delicate with the pups, this early exposure can prove invaluable.

Meeting Your Pup For The First Time

Most breeders prefer to keep puppies for seven weeks before allowing families to adopt them. During this period, the pups spend most of their time in the company of their mother. By the fourth week, they are spending an increasing amount of time away from their mother, and interacting with people. By the end of the seventh week, the pups are released to their new families.

When you bring a new puppy home, it's important to continue his socialization. During the first week away from his mother, avoid abandoning him for long periods of time. He will feel a sense of loss for his mother and littermates. Spend time with him to keep his attention occupied.

A lot of puppies go through a phase near their eighth week during which they suddenly display apprehension for anything that is unfamiliar to them. This lasts for a couple of weeks. It will pass.

Providing Ongoing Opportunities For Socialization

The first twelve months of a puppy's life are very impressionable. The experiences to which he is exposed will shape his behaviors for the rest of his life. It is critical that you take every opportunity to introduce your pup to new people and environments. Take him to a park where others bring their own pets. Take him on walks using different routes that expose him to a variety of other owners and their pets.

An ideal outlet for meeting others is within group obedience classes. This gives your puppy a chance to interact with his own species and other people in a friendly and controlled environment. He'll learn that those who are unfamiliar to him pose no threat.

A puppy who has received proper socialization early in his life typically develops into a friendly, happy, and well-adjusted adult dog. These are the qualities that make for a more pleasant canine companion.
