Training Aggressive Dogs

Training Aggressive Dogs

Having an aggressive dog is not only a problem to the dog owner, but also to other people. You will never know when your dog may attack or injure someone. In fact, dog aggression can result in injuries and even deaths of innocent people, and there are many laws and by-laws that are imposed to punish dog owners whose dogs are guilty of physical assault.

Find the cause of aggression before re-training

If you have an aggressive dog, you should know that it is possible to curb its aggression with the right training. With proper training, aggressive dogs will learn not to be hostile towards strangers, or your friends and relatives. However, if you really wish to understand the basics of re-training aggressive dogs, you have to know why dogs become aggressive.

There are numerous reasons why a dog can become aggressive. The main reason may be that it is territorial and feels that its territory is being invaded. Sometimes, it feels threatened with certain changes in the environment, and it will become defensive and react with aggression. This type of aggression usually comes about because of lack of security and confidence, and simple dog obedience training is not sufficient to curb the aggressive behavior of the dog.

Such aggression requires special dog training. The usual symptoms of dog aggression are barking and lunging at people. These symptoms have to be controlled before they become a serious problem that causes bodily harm on other people.

Ask your dog vet to suggest an aggressive dog trainer

Since a dog vet often meets with trainers and dog owners, he or she is the best person to approach when you are looking for the perfect aggressive dog trainer. A qualified trainer will have the necessary experience to control the aggressive behavior of any dog. However, remember that aggressive dog training costs more than normal dog training, and it is usually done with a special skill set. So, set aside sufficient money to pay for this kind of training.

Though you have to pay quite a large sum of money for aggressive dog training, you can be assured that you will get the results that you desire. It is not advisable that you enroll your aggressive dog for normal dog training classes because the trainers will not take any risk to train it with other dogs in the school.

Some training schools may harm your dog

Instead, your dog has to be sent to a special dog obedience training school where qualified trainers have the necessary skills and knowledge to handle aggressive dogs. You can use the yellow pages to find the best training school for your dog. One thing you have to consider when choosing the right trainer for your dog is the training method employed by the training school.
You should avoid training schools that use obsolete training methods that can cause harm to your dog.

It is always better to choose a more experienced dog training school. This is because such a school will have the necessary experience and knowledge to train aggressive dogs effectively. As such, it will produce better results with the re-training of dogs.

With the right aggressive dog training techniques, it is possible to train your dog to control its aggression. Once your dog stops its aggressive behavior, you will find that it is indeed a loving companion, and you can spend valuable time with it.

Without the aggressive behavior, you need not worry about the safety of your family or that the dog will bite other dogs or people.

Use websites for dog training tips

If there are no aggressive dog training schools or trainers in your vicinity, you can also search the internet to learn some tips on how to curb your dog's aggression. There are some sites on the internet that provide these tips. However, whether or not such tips are effective depends on how you understand and implement them on your dog.

Biting Dog Training

Biting Dog Training

What's to be done with the active golden retriever that is hooked on biting clothing and on jumping on people? The average dog can be noticed growing more agitated with its jumping and nipping if it does not get people to play with it or in general when it does not get its way.

Whether its Golden Retriever Training or any other dog training, prevention is the best cure of course. First of all, the dog may be distracted by long sleeves and any dangling pieces of wardrobe. So keep tucked, tied, folded and-or hidden all those belts, ties, long hair, etc.

The practical solution for our landshark-dog problem is to suddenly "freeze" and turn into a statue, looking away, when a dog misbehaves. When it sinks its teeth in, say No Bite in a serious but not emotional tone. But if the dog displays desirable behavior such as sitting or standing on all fours, things return to normal and you can have fun again with the dog.

Interestingly, most of the advice here can also be tried to remedy a dog that is mainly into nipping ankles, fingers and any square inch of human skin within mouth's reach. With nipping, the main point is to discourage the dog or puppy by letting out the yip similar to that of a hurt puppy, then giving the dog the cold shoulder. With that, it understands that it better behave, or else it gets ignored.

To go on, a good no-no to remember is to not yell at the dog when it bites, since the dog may even get more agitated and more confused.

Its also good to try wearing some old clothes in order to teach the dog that biting your clothes makes you freeze. Do this together with an alternative behavior, and soon you may see it stop.

Another solution is to ask the dog for alternative behavior, which then results to a nice treat. In other words, divert the dog's energy into a behavior that you find desirable.

Timeouts is the third option you may want to try out. If ignoring does not work, try putting the dog in another room for a short time out (about a minute). On some occasions this has actually worked to eliminate jumping and nipping in some dogs.

Again, another important Golden Retriever Training tip to remember is that a crate must never be a time place; all crate training falls apart the day the dog is made to see the crate as something negative. Rather, why not use a bathroom, or the laundry room as a time out place?

Keeping the dog preoccupied with other commands may also help. Try practising sit, stays, and reward the dog for doing such instead of focusing on staving its jumping on you.

Pet Aggressive

Pet Aggressive

Adopting a pet should be one of the happiest moments in a family's life, but there are sometimes unforeseen events that can bring tears, disappointment and even heartbreak. Knowing a few key safety tips can lessen any problems or danger and make finding your new best friend fun, exciting and unendingly rewarding.

1. Adopting a pet should not be a spur of the moment decision. A pet is not just an accessory that you pick up because you considered him a "bargain" or because he just struck your heart chords just the right way. This is a commitment to a living being, one that will need love, food and shelter for many years to come. Make sure you and your entire family is fully committed to that concept before bringing a pet home.

2. Shelter pets are not always lost doggies that cannot find their way home. Sometimes pets have severe behavioral or emotional problems that their owners cannot handle. While not every pet at the shelter is a reject, there are bound to be a few, so make sure that you ask questions.

3. Sometimes shelter staff can miss serious health or behavior problems. Before you bring your adopted pet home, make sure that he gets a thorough vet exam, including all immunizations. This is especially important if there are small children or other pets in your home.

4. Do not just bring an adopted pet into your home and give him free reign of the place. Allow your new pet to explore from room to room, while on a leash. Consider crate training while you are not directly at hand, and only allow interaction between the new pet and children and other pets while you are there. Eventually, your adopted pet will settle in and blend into the family, but it will take some time and patience.

5. Do not hesitate to bring any pet that develops signs of aggression back to the shelter. Saving an animal's life is not worth risking your family's safety for. And, if that does become the case, make sure that shelter staff is aware of the exact problem. Perhaps the dog does not like children, but is fine with adults. Maybe the new pet was snappy with other animals, or one gender. Allow staff to know so that they can help match the pet with the right family on his next try.

Dogs Chewing

Dogs Chewing

Your four legged friend is a fantastic addition to your home and you love him/her to bits but there's a problem! You get home after a hard days work to find your beautiful cushions ripped to shreds, corners of your new carpet torn up and bite marks in that expensive table you saved for years to be able to afford. So lets have a look at how you stop dogs chewing.

WHY DO DOGS AND PUPPIES CHEW?

Hello, my name is Ozzy and I've just had my first birthday. I used to chew my mum's carpet and there's still a big hole in the corner of our dining room, oops! We chew because when we're puppies aged between 14-28 weeks old, we're teething and by chewing things, it helps to soothe our gums and loosen them around our teeth. This allows our 'baby teeth' to fall out so that our 'big teeth' came come through. It also strengthens our teeth and gums.

Once we're around six months old, and possibly for the next 18 months, we want to explore! Babies use their hands to explore, dogs and puppies use their mouths! We want to know what everything tastes like. Dogs have been doing this since the beginning of time, it's in our nature to chew! Stopping your dog chewing furniture can be a nightmare, so you need to figure out how to stop it fast!

Here's the clever bit: When we chew, it causes a chemical release of endorphins which calms us down. Chewing helps relieve stress and anxiety. It makes us feel better, it doesn't necessarily mean that we're stressed or anxious if we chew.

SO HOW DO STOP MY DOG CHEWING FURNITURE?

When it comes to chewing, it makes no difference to us if it's an expensive sofa or a stick that we've picked up from the garden. We have no sense of value, we're dogs for goodness sake! We need you to teach us what's ours and what's yours. We need you to give us things that we're allowed to chew. If we've nothing to chew that's ours, we'll just go for the first thing we can lay our teeth on (your sofa, table leg etc). To stop dogs chewing, let us know what we can chew! If you give us an old shoe to chew, we're going to think that we have permission to chew all shoes!

The best thing that you can do is give us 3 or 4 toys (all different shapes and textures) to play with. Kongs are great, every dog should have one! They're rubber toys that you can fill with treats (marmite, cheese, biscuits, meat etc) and they give us hours of fun trying to chew all the tasty treats! Make sure you get one suitable for puppies first though. Nicer than a leather sofa any day! Other great things to chew are rawhide bones and rope tugs.

To stop your dog chewing furniture, spray a deterrent on it, like bitter apple spray, yuck!! If something has that on it, you can guarantee that us dogs will be stopping chewing that!

REWARD US FOR BEING GOOD!

If you see us chewing one of our toys, and not your dining room chair, then praise us. It helps us to learn! Don't do it too much though, if we're having a good chewing session we don't really want to be interrupted. If you do catch us chewing something that we shouldn't, a firm 'NO' will do the trick. Make sure that you then give us something that you can stop your dog chewing furniture!

It's important to praise us when we're being good and correct us when we're being bad.

So there's a few tips on how to stop dogs chewing!

Dogs Biting

Dogs Biting

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) revealed that more than 4.7 million people a year are bitten by dogs. These high incidents of dog bites result in various medical bills, law suits, and sometimes euthanasia for the dog. These cases might be avoidable if dog owners take safety precautions such as training their dogs not to bite.

There are many common techniques that can be used to assist a dog to decrease, and eventually eliminate, biting behavior. The effectiveness of these techniques will vary from breed to breed, but with patience and repetition, puppies and adult dogs can learn to not bite.

The younger the dog, the easier the training will be. Because mouthing, nibbling, and nipping come naturally to a puppy, an owner must be firm to stop this behavior when it starts. Even though it may begin as a cute nuisance, it can turn into a bad habit if not contained from the get-go.

Puppies as young as five weeks old can begin to respond to simple commands. For biting behavior, a gentle, firm "No!" and a slight squeeze of the muzzle can be a good place to start. Be careful that you don't squeeze in a way that causes the dog to bite its tongue. Also be careful not to squeeze hard or too high up on the muzzle. Sensitive and delicate odor receptors of the dog are situated high up inside the nose.

Squeezing your dogs muzzle will help him associate the verbal command with the discomfort of the squeeze. Since most dogs are uncomfortable with having their muzzles squeezed, this will help him think twice about biting.

Another dog training technique that might help eliminate biting is to socialize your dog since dogs that are not use to people or other dogs do tend to bite. You want to socialize your dog eat an early age to develop his calmness and confidence. Your dog will be more friendly to your guests, other animals and even strangers if socialized properly.

Socialize young dogs with other non-aggressive dogs. This will help them to adjust to differences in smell, looks, temperament, etc. and, ultimately, prevent fearful and territorial behavior.

Although dogs have the tendency to mouth and nip, they naturally inhibit this behavior when they are playing with their mates. Train them to develop this behavior by expanding his playmates to include your family members, guests and other pets.

When introducing your pet to an animal from outside the home, be sure to keep both animals at a distance from each other. Allow the animals to approach one other at a slow pace while they take in their smells and act out other normal behavior.

Keep an eye out for uncomfortable body language, growling, ears that stand up straight or other signs of possible anger. Have the dog sit down, rub it's back area, and extend your hand to the second animal, and then convey the second animal's scent to your pet. Allow them to get to know each other slowly.

At the age of four and a half months, dogs normally learn to inhibit biting. But for some dogs, the learning process may take longer time. Dogs behavior and their ability to learn varies with the breed, age, an other factors. Training of dogs will be more easy if they are started young.

Some dogs never fully let go of the biting instinct, and in this case, the dogs must be carefully watched by their owners. If your dog is a biter, then you must insure that it cannot get close enough to bite a person or another animal.

Persistent long term use of these dog training techniques will likely result in a more stable and fun pet, not to mention that it could prevent an unwanted situation where your dog could get hurt or hurt someone else.
