Pet Agression

As any meter reader or mail carrier would tell you, dog biting situations are no fun at all. If you are a pet owner, having a nasty dog around can be a nightmare. You are constantly worried, waiting for when your dog breaks free and bites a chunk out of a perfect stranger. But thankfully, it isn't necessary to live like this, in fear that your dog will eventually bite someone. With some training and patience, you can turn your pet into man's best friend - what it should be.

Well then, exactly how do you stop your those dog biting tendencies? For one thing, it is important to recognize that angry dog behavior is not limited to certain breeds. While pit bulls often have a bad reputation, there can be nasty dogs in the "kinder, gentler breeds", like collies or labradors. With improper treatment or neglect from humans, even the sweetest dogs can turn into the next Cujo. As with people, when it comes to dogs, you "get what you give", so be sure to treat your dog with respect and love, regardless of the breed.

And if your pet is one that always seems to get excited easily, then watching them carefully around children is a must. Dogs naturally fight for dominance, so it can be easy for one to perceive a child's rough play as a challenge or threat. It is always a good idea to teach your children to be calm with your pet. Also, you should let your child know that playing games like tug of war can lead to dog aggression, and more specifically dog biting, and even activate its attack instincts.

And you shouldn't ever grab your dog's paws or tail (and definitely not the rear ones). This is because a dog cannot see what is behind it, and its natural reaction is to defend itself in such a situation. Furthermore, dog biting can be invoked with direct eye contact because dogs will take this as a challenge to their dominance. As well, you should not use any sort of attack command with a dog unless the situation absolutely calls for this. Just by using a little extra caution, you can prevent a gentle dog from becoming nasty, or from aggravating a pet that has a propensity for aggressive behavior.
